Urbanism I - Basic and Evolution

The subject "Urban design I - fundamentals of urban design" acquaints the students of the Faculty of Architecture for the first time with the problems of urban design. The first part of classes covers the significance of urban design in the society, its relation to land use planing and its contemporary interpretation. Emphasis is put on the conceptual principles of developing the city's functional components and its functional system. Students get also acquainted with the urban typology of buildings, utilities, residential units, commercial and non-commercial facilities, recreation facilities, green spaces, technical and transport infrastructure. In classes and tutorials students gain fundamental skills in urban designing, and are prepared for managing a basic urban design studio.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Detailed knowledge of contemporary urban planning problems and prospective urban development trends.

Prerequisites

Theoretical and practical knowledge of problems and ability to solve them, needed for architectural design activity.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Written exam. In the final classification there shall be counted 1/3 seminar evaluation, 2/3 written exam evaluation. It is necessary to gain absolute (half and more) point count in both parts of evaluation, otherwise the exam is not passed. The results of control test (max. 5 points) are bonus that is added to gained point count (to maximum amount of 100 points).

Aims

Students are familiarized with urbanistic building typology, devices and housing elements, commercial and non-commercial equipment, technical facilities and transportation. During lessons and seminars students also acquire basics of urbanistic designing and are prepared for managing basic urbanistic studio.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Passing seminar, processing and presentation of seminar works. 80% of practice teaching is mandatory, 20% is not necessary to substitute.
