Emerging Sciences and Technologies

Course provides base knowledge about emerging (convergent) sciences and technologies, which are consequence of the interaction between mechanical engineering and natural sciences. In addition to general knowledge related to this field, the main attention is paid to the following areas: nanotechnologies, nanophotonics, use of solar energy, energetic materials, biotechnology, chemical robotics, biomimetics, computer vision, cognitive sciences, neuroeconomics and neuromarketing.
Learning outcomes of the course unit
General knowledge of possibilities, which are provided by new emerging sciences and technologies to mechanical engineers. Students should be able to creatively use findings and outcomes of emerging sciences and technologies when designing new machines and devices.
Knowledge in area of physics, mechanics, material sciences and machine design. Knowledge should correspond to a level of bachelor study of mechanical engineering.

The course is taught through lectures, which provide base principles and theory of the specific disciplines.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Examination: exam is in format of the defence of the semester paper. Student has to choose and describe one specific product, machine or technology, which may arise from direct use of findings and outcomes of emerging sciences and technologies. Topic has to be processed from the perspective of the designer, mechanical engineer. Elaboration form: essay, lecture, bibliographic review.
Language of instruction
Course objective is to understand basic knowledge in the area of emerging (convergent) sciences and technologies, which are consequence of the interaction between mechanical engineering and natural sciences; especially nanotechnology, biotechnology, biomedicine, IT, and cognitive sciences. It is more unification of scientific disciplines than multidisciplinary cooperation.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Attendance at lectures is obligatory and checked by the lecturer. Teaching is according to a week schedule. Compensation of missed lessons depends on the instructions of course supervisor.
