Theory of Vehicles

ÚSI-EDTEVAcad. year: 2019/2020

The course will acquaint the students with the basic theoretical findings, oriented to vehicle dynamic. The core of the subject is to understand relations between applied forces and vehicle motion. On the basis of this knowledge it will be possible to get understanding of the function of vehicle systems, and to create relations between vehicle construction and dynamic characteristics.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students will learn to apply basic principles of mechanics (dynamics) on tasks related to vehicle dynamics:
- to evaluate and to predict acceleration performance of vehicles
- to evaluate and to predict stopping distance of vehicles
- to evaluate and to predict braking stability of vehicles
- to understand the problems of anti-lock braking systems
- to understand the directional characteristics of tires
- to evaluate and to predict low and high speed cornering of vehicles

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematics and technical mechanics, kinematics, dynamics.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching is carried out through lectures and seminars. Lectures consist of interpretations of basic principles, methodology of given discipline, problems and their exemplary solutions. Seminars particularly support practical mastery of subject matter presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Requirements for Course-unit credit award: The orientation within problems discussed and the ability of solving them, examined by working-out assigned tasks without significant mistakes. Examination: The exam verifies and evaluates the knowledge of physical fundamentals of presented problems. The exam consists of a written part (test) and an oral part.

Aims

The aim is to get theoretical findings, which enable the students to analyze vehicle dynamics behaviour and to understand the function of mechanical and electronical vehicle systems.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is obligatory, checked by a teacher. The way of compensation of absence is solved individually with a course provider.
