Learning outcomes of the course unit

The doctoral student is able to read a foreign-language professional publication in his / her field of study and to understand exactly the theses, ideas and solutions presented in the texts.
They can actively use the acquired knowledge in both written and spoken language, i.e. he / she can describe, clarify and summarize his / her thoughts, opinions and attitudes in his / her own words.
He / she is able to understand spoken professional speech / lecture in foreign language and to respond spontaneously to it orally.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of general English (exceptionally another foreign language) at least at B1 level according to CEFR.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam consists of reading and translating a snippet of a scholarly text, followed by a conversation on the subject of the studied publications and the doctoral dissertation.
For the exam, the PhD student submits a written summary of a key vocabulary from the studied publication and its translation into Czech.
To pass the exam, the doctoral student must prove that he / she is able to understand the professional text read at an acceptable level and is able to participate in a professionally focused discussion in his / her field fluently and spontaneously.

Aims

The aim of the course is to obtain:
a) knowledge of grammatical characteristics, vocabulary, sentences and phrases of academic English,
b) knowledge of the technical terminology of the relevant scientific field at B1+ level and above according to CEFR.
