Special Technology of Binding Materials

Hydraulic binding materials – Portland cement, system related with portland cement clinker, composition and petrography of silicate clinker, production of portland cement, processes during firing of portland cement, hydration processes, determination of cement, cement paste and concrete properties , types of cements. Lime. Gypsum. New types of inorganic binding materials. Properties of cement pastes and concret during setting and hardening process.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Knowledge of the production, composition and properties of Portland cement.
Knowledge of portland cementum hydration.
Knowledge of the properties of mixed cements and pozzolan impurities.
Knowledge of production and properties of aluminous cement.
Basic orientation in concrete technology.
Knowledge of alkali-activated binders and other non-traditional mortars.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge from inorganic and physical chemistry and silicate technology.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Oral exam with preparation (30 min.) in the scope of the curriculum and the extent of the lectures.

2. Chemical and phase composition of Portland cement
3. Hydration of Portland cement
4. Mixed cements, pozzolans, blast furnace slag, fly ash
5. Aluminate cement - production, properties, hydration, use
6. Special cements
7. Lime and lime binders
8. Gypsum and sulphate binders
10. Concrete - components, fresh and hardened concrete, testing, additives, HPC
11. Alkali activated binders and geopolymers
12. MDF (Macro defect free) composites

The aim of course is improvement of knowledges in special areas of ceramics, technology testing of raw materials and products and progressive technologies
