Practical English 5

The course is aimed at the development of academic language competences on the proficiency level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It focuses on the language for professional and academic purposes, analysis of technical texts, listening and reproduction, writing and formal written communication.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student is able to:
- Write academic texts with the correct structure
- Participate in formal written professional and business communication
- Read long texts on native speaker level

Prerequisites

Before the electronic registration of the subject HPA5, a student has to pass successfully the exam of the subject Practical English 4 (subject code HPA4). This exam corresponds to the level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The subject focuses on improving the communication skills and specialist language knowledge.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

A written test and exam.
The written test based on written assignments (min. 24, max. 40 points).
Written exam (min. 30, max. 60 points).

Active participation in seminars and a minimum of 75% attendance are required according to the regulations issued by the Head of the Department of Languages and presented on the Department website http://www.ujaz.feec.vutbr.cz/ and fulfilment of given assignments during the semester.

Aims

Development of academic skills and knowledge with partucilar focus on the writing skils on the level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
