Waste management and engineering

Definition of the waste-related issues, legislation and management, sources of the municipal and industrial waste, types of wastes and their use, recycling, disposal, fundamental waste technologies – biological, thermal, landfil and solidifaction, alternative ways of waste treatment, technologies used for waste treatment.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Review about development, reprocessing, recycling and disposal of wastes. Graduate can take position either as a manager or an operation engineer in a company dealing with waste treatment.

Prerequisites

Basics of general chemistry.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in the form of lecture - 2 hours/week and seminars 2 hours/week.
The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

oral examination, to proceed requires at least 50% of correct answers.

Course curriculum

1) Introduction and history of waste management, legislation
2) Waste from mining, metallurgy waste
3) Industrial waste, the most common chemical technologies, pharmaceutical waste, paper mill waste
4) Polymeric waste
5) Food industry and agriculture waste, other types of waste
6) Municipal waste
7) Fundamental water treatment technologies, composting, vermicomposting
8) Thermal methods: incineration, pyrolysis, gasification and other technologies
9) Landfilling, biogas production
10) Recycling
11) Alternative waste treatment technology
12) Capturing of carbon dioxides strategies
13) Devices used in waste treatment technologies, waste separation

Aims

The students obtain information on collecting, separation, transport and waste disposal. Students will learn the major sources and types of industrial, agriculture and household waste and conventional and alternative technologies for waste disposal.
