Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will learn the methodology of scientific research. They will be able to critically evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of particular research methods in relation to their own scientific field of study .

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures and group tutorials, which immediately follow them, are combined. Relationships between general information about the scientific research methodology sphere and particular subject area between each dissertation are articulated.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Non-letter grade is given upon the submitting of research preparation plan. The plan consists of the basic intended dissertation structure; each chapter is described from the perspective of concrete scientific method that will be applied.

Course curriculum

1)Organizational structure of science at Czech universities and in the Academy of Science
2) Character and content of scientific research and its formal attributes; methodology of research evaluation
3) Research methodology - survey of methods which are likely to be used in dissertations written at the FFA
4) Resource gathering, analysis, and interpretation
5) Resources: methods of processing; modes of work in libraries and archives; EIZ; BUT digital library; EBSCO ad; Open Access publishing
6) Scientific research ethics

Aims

Students will learn the methodology of scientific research. They will be able to critically evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of particular research methods in relation to their own scientific field of study .

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Mandatory attendance at lectures. Two absences per semester tolerated.
