Course detail
Sustainable Building
FAST-CH009Acad. year: 2018/2019
Sustainable building represents a progress of building industry towards the achievement of sustainable development of society in terms of ecology, social-economy and culture. The basic principles and aims of sustainable construction are presented in the Agenda 21 document. This course deals especially with ecological and energy aspects of building and possibilities of environmental-friendly and recycled material use in building constructions. Students will become familiar with the multi-criteria assessment methodology SBToolCZ.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
After completing the course, students will be familiar with the principles of sustainable building and principle of multi-criteria assessment of buildings. Students will master the principles of barrier-free design of buildings. Students will understand the methodology of life cycle assessment. Finally, students will be able to design buildings using renewable and recycled building materials. Students will be able to assess residential buildings according to the methodology SBToolCZ.
Prerequisites
Good theoretical knowledge of building physics and fundamentals of building construction designing are the assumption for an understanding of the course content. General knowledge of common construction materials is necessary as well.
Co-requisites
- calculation of energy performance of buildings
Recommended optional programme components
Not applicable.
Recommended or required reading
Not applicable.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Teaching the lectures is in the form of Powerpoint presentation with teachers commentary. For better illustration the interpretation is completed with samples of building materials. The students works on individual assignments and consult them with the teacher.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Successful completion of the course is conditional on participation in seminars and execution of multi-criteria assessment of selected building.
Language of instruction
Czech
Work placements
