Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students will gain the knowledge on system and biology of water organisms, their ecological interactions in aqueous environment and terrestric ecosystems.

In theoretical part of the course the students get acquaint with up-to-date knowledge on the structure, properties and function of aqueous ecosystems (water reservoirs, streams). Besides the studium of abiotic factors of aqueous biotopes, students will get acquaint with biology of water organisms and also with the basic hydrobiological methods.

The practical part of the course is devoted to laboratory practice, in which the students will provide the ecotoxicological biotests, which are used in practice. The part of laboratory sessions is terrain practice.

The course is intended for students of Water management and water structures. After graduation they will be better employable in water management practice – water treatment plants, administration of river basins, research institutes, universities, state administration.

Prerequisites

General knowledge on biology
Ability to do laboratory work
Ability to evaluate laboratory results: writing the reports, measurements data processing

Co-requisites

None.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
Basic teaching methods in this subject are lectures and laboratory sessions. In the laboratory sessions, part of the session is aimed at calculations, part at practical schooling - practical application of toxicity tests, their evaluation and interpretation.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The student has to be active on laboratory exercises for successful completion of this subject and create the laboratory protocols. The student is required to pass the credit test in accordance with the BUT Rules for Study and Examination.
