Learning outcomes of the course unit

Orientation in problems of sociology of society and social groups, analysis of social relations, processes in society and social development. Understanding the points of contact between sociology, architecture and technology. Knowledge of social structure in whole society level and also in level of organization, firm, personality. Application of sociology in future job of absolvents in building firms, architectural work and technical practise. Knowledge of basic sociological principles, schools and paradigms. Connections between sociology and technology, evaluation of the importance of sociological perspectives on the state and development of the company. Assessing the meaning and purpose of sociological research for understanding reality around us. The aim is to gain a new skill thinking about social phenomena in the context of corporate and personal life. nowledge of principles of modern thinking about social phenomena. Framing sociology in the context of architecture and culture. Using of sociology in the technical and engineering praxis, in firm, work and in personal life.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of general sociology, social psychology, economy, philosophy or ethics (in the secondary school level from subjects "Foundation of Social Sciences" or "Civics"), knowledge of elemental terminology from sociology, information about practical possibilities of sociology and some methods of sociological research (observing, questionnaire etc.), knowledge of basic statistic methodology in working up of data.

Co-requisites

Theoretical description of society and social laws of its development, knowledge of social structure with view to function, stability and changes, application of theoretical sociology to the area of firms and institutions, sociological description conjuction with other social sciences, especially with psychology, ethics and economy, personal role in society, using of knowledge in professional life, new view to society in context, ability of assessment of various social problems.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Explanation is passed by word-teaching method in the form of lectures accompanied by rich presentation material. Explanation is followed by small practical activities. Basic theoretical topics are spread of voluntary topics according to student's interest; every student prepares one's presentation on chosen topic from the area of general or applied sociology.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Students show their orientation in theoretical sociology in test from theoretical part. They also prepare an evaluated presentation of chosen topic from the area of applied sociology. Summary evaluation of students consists of testing of knowledge test (55%) and of prezentation (45%) which student shows the ability to describe and analyse the chosen sociological problem from real life or from the applied area of firms or technical praxis.

1. Introduction into sociology. Importance of sociology. Subject and methodology of general and applicated sociology.
2. Society, social groups, sociometry. The importance of sociology to society, man and architect.
3. Sociological terminology, schools, streams and paradigmas - summary, importance and heritage.
4. History of sociology, basic theories of sociological thought. Inspiration for present.
5. The theory of consensus and the theory of conflict. The problem of orientation in the world, social control.
6. Traditional and modern society in sociological concepts. Conservativism, rationalism and liberalism.
7. Complementary approach to the interpretation of social phenomena in society. Social structure of society. Demographic development.
8. Sociology in architectural and urban design. Determinism of the environment. Neigborhood phenomenon.
9. Uniformity and diversity. Social stratification and space. Sociology of family, importance of family. Family and housing.
10. Public and private spaces. Sociological evaluation of living level. Preferences and ideas of people on housing.
11. Towns and village as a social units - agreements and differences. Architectural determinism. Urbanization in development.
12. Sociological research in architecture. Future housing. Sociology of housing and aspect of environment. Life between buildings.
13. Partitipation of users in the architectural design process, devolopment programmes. The social aspects of architecture.

Orientation in problems of sociology of society and social groups;
analysis of social relations, processes in society and global social development;
knowledge of social structure in whole society and also in level of organization, firm, personality;
research of relation between sociology and housing, architecture and ecology;
application of knowledge from sociological theory to future job of absolvents in building firms, architectorial workplaces and technical practise.
