Building Materials and Geology

Basic information about structure, basic building material properties and their use as building materials. Methods of testing physical–mechanical properties and durability characteristics with focus on destructive methods. Basic deformational characteristics of building materials and their monitoring. Properties of building materials: stone, aggregate, binder, concrete, mortar, building ceramics, metal, timber, polymers and asphalts. Practical laboratory tests of selected building materials. Acquiring knowledge of rock types creating foundation soil. Action of the internal and external geological factors affecting the properties and behaviour of foundation soil with a particular focus on the influence of surface and ground water. Acquiring knowledge of the evaluating methodology of foundation soils for construction in accordance with the current requirements of the practice and European standards.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students completing the course will acquire the following professional knowledge and skills: Determination of volume mass and bulk weight of aggregate. Determination of porosity of bulk and compacted aggregate. Determination of particle size distribution of aggregates. Determination of normal density and setting times of cement paste. Production of fresh mortar from dry mortar mixture and determination of its consistency. Determination of volume mass, tensile strength in bending and compressive strength of hardened mortar. Determination of volume mass of different types of concretes, of tensile strength in bending and compressive strength. Determination of the actual dimensions of bricks and of their volume mass, their tensile strength in bending and compressive strength. Determination of the type of steel reinforcement according to its surface finish, determination of its nominal diameter. Tensile strength test at ambient temperature. Determination of the volume mass of polymer samples. Tensile test of polymer. Determination of moisture content and volume mass of wood. Determination of the compressive strength of wood parallel to fibres and of flexural strength. Determination of the geological and foundation conditions of structures.

Prerequisites

Plane geometry, stereometry, goniometric functions, units of physical quantities and their transfers, the fundamental laws of physics, mechanics of bodies

Statics of rigid bodies, elasticity theory of rigid bodies, Hooke's law, the effects of static and dynamic loading, deformation of body

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The educational activity is provided by means of lectures and laboratory practice. Lectures cover the explanation of basic principles, methodology of the discipline, problems and their solutions. Laboratory practice supports the practical mastery of the subject matter presented in the lectures with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The study results are checked by continuous monitoring during the course, by a credit and examination. The credit requirements include active participation in all laboratory exercises, correctly processed logs in the exercise book and passing the final test. The exam tests the comprehensive command of the material presented in lectures and the ability to apply the acquired knowledge independently and creatively.
