Learning outcomes of the course unit

A student acquires skills in construction and shape of earth formation, drainage of railway substructure, design of constructive layers and their evaluation. The student is introduced in geotechnical prospecting and other diagnostic methods. The student also acquires skills in railway superstructure, its components and modern structures and recent technical development. The student also introduces to switches and crossings and learns design of turnout assemblies.

Prerequisites

Soil mechanics, stability analysis of slope, earth pressures, soil compaction, improvement of soil properties, stabilization.
Strength and elasticity of materials, basic principles of structural mechanics.
Railway track design and subdivision and construction of rail substructure and its construction layers

Co-requisites

Physical-mechanical and technological properties of the rock and geological environment. Design of prestressed concrete structural elements.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching is kept in a form lectures, seminars and individual consultations. The students' work is completed by specified individual work, work assigned for individual study with the active participation of students and students' work with LMS Moodle. Excursions to the construction sites or to manufacturers are organized.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The course is completed with a credit and exam. Exam consists of two parts - practical, in which a student designs characteristic cross-section of railway track and theoretical, in which answers questions regarding the construction of the superstructure and substructure.
Acquisition of the credit is conditional on attendance, delivery of a design of section of the railway track, including the construction of the superstructure and substructure and submitting of all calculations.
