Learning outcomes of the course unit

A student improves acquires knowledge and skills in railway structures, road structures and soil mechanics in practical lessons during field training. The objective of the subject is to practise acquires knowledge and skills in field of design track geometry parameters and track layout, design of section of road in geodetic surveying material. Student is practically introduced to methods of geotechnical prospecting and assessment of steel and concrete bridges.

Prerequisites

Geodesy in Civil Engineering, coordinate systems, geodetic computations, measurement of directions and angles, distance measurements, height systems, height measurements, setting out of buildings, roads and railways, maps Track alignment design parameters and its spatial positions, railway track design, subdivision and construction of rail substructure and its construction layers. Complete highway route design, computation of highway geometry. Soil mechanics, classification of soils for engineering purposes.

Co-requisites

Railway track geometry components and alignment, assessment of deviations of track geometry parameters during construction works and acceptance process or operation and maintenance, track spatial arrangements, construction of rail substructure and its arrangement. Road construction materials, its use for particular layers, system of testing. Design of steel structures on the base of experiment results. Realization and evaluation of experiments.

Recommended optional programme components

A student can attend excursions focused on railway structures or construction sites.

Recommended or required reading

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students work in groups (8 – 10 students) and a goal is practical application of theoretical knowledge. The students' work is completed by specified individual work with the active participation of students. Excursions to the construction sites or to manufacturers are organized.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The course is completed with a credit, whose acquisition is conditional on delivery of complex projects which includes road and railway structures, geotechnical prospecting, diagnosis of road pavement, steel and concrete bridges.
