Basics of Law

Contents of the course is a set of basic legal knowledge, focusing in particular on general legal principles and concepts and fundamentals of selected fields of law such as civil, commercial and criminal law. Part of the interpretation are also interpretation of legal, arbitration and bankruptcy proceedings, including enforcement.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students understand the structure of the Legal Regulation, basic concepts in the fields of civil, commercial and criminal law, codes and procedural regulations. They are able to solve simple problems related to legal issues.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching is carried out through lectures and seminars. Lectures consist of interpretations of basic principles, methodology of given discipline, problems and their exemplary solutions. Seminars particularly support practical mastery of subject matter presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Requirements for Credit: presentation of seminar work describing or solving selected legal issues (eg, contract, claim, etc.). The oral exam consists of discussion of the submitted work and some additional issues.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction and definition of the subject.
2. Legal Regulations of the Czech Republic, public law, private law, legal terminology.
3. Introduction to civil law - parties to civil relations, and their representation, natural and legal persons. Property rights.
4th Civil law - liability and unjust enrichment.
5th Commercial law.
6th Obligations under the Civil and Commercial Code. Selected types of contracts.
7th Employment law - employment, rights and obligations of employees and employers.
8th Litigation and arbitration - Civil Procedure, Administrative Procedure Act, arbitration.
9th Enforcement of the decision by the Civil Procedure Code and according to the execution order.
10th Bankruptcy Law - bankruptcy, bankrupt, a trustee in bankruptcy, creditor institution, and the course of bankruptcy proceedings.
11th Criminal law - crime and criminal responsibility. Selected facts.
12th Criminal procedure - stages of the criminal process.
13th Legislation of immaterial demesne.

Aims

The aim is to give students a general knowledge of law and the rule of law of the Czech Republic, all of that with focus on legal branches and areas that are most related to studies. Each student will prove his or hers knowledge and skills in final exam - see Assesment methods.
