The course is concerned with graphic design (visual communication design) as a means of understanding and humanization of the environment. History and the present of graphic design. Introduction to semiology. Also dealt with are the following topics: Application of lettering, symbol, picture, colour etc. in typographic and graphic designs, and also in the graphic presentation of designer’s projects. The creative component of work is in the first stage: design of visual style (Corporate Identity) and processing of the design manual. The content of the work is design of symbol, logotype, colors, typefaces, and then their development into practical applications for electronic and print media. The second task could be a project from information design sphere: provozní operational or orientation graphics. Examples of project themes: A) "Corporate Identity Program" (CIP) in two stages. Example 1: "CIP of events: fairs, exhibitions, conferences, workshops, competitions, etc." First stage - corporate symbol and logotype, color, corporate type selection. Second stage - CIP application: A1 poster, tickets, invitation, program, website, etc. Example 2: "CIP of enterprise (company)" First Stage - corporate symbol and logotype, corporate color, corporate typeface. Second stage - CIP applications: service graphics, cars, web design, etc., incl. typographic design of design manual. B) "Information design" - grraphic design of controllers - pictographical orientation system.
The course has been upgraded with the support of the OPVK project. "The Studio digital sculpture and new media project", reg. No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0278, is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the state budget of the Czech Republic.
Learning outcomes of the course unit
Basic orientation in the graphic design and the ability to apply it to the corporate design, and to the information design (service and operational graphics), i.e. above all in the association with the industrial design and communication design,
Basic knowledge of development and classification of type, typographic and composition rules, basic knowledge of technologies of visual communication realization, e.g. print, typesetting etc. See courses "Type and Typography" (from B-PDS study program). Praxis in graphical 2D programmes (CorelDraw, Adobe, etc.) is necessary, and of 3D programmes (Rhinoceros etc.) is welcommed.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by creative work in ateliers.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance in lessons, meeting assigned projects deadlines. Oral defence of the project. Design and the level of presentation are evaluated separately. Written test verifies global orientation and knowledge of graphic design theory and techniques.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on tasks and a test. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects and the test are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.
Language of instruction
An orientation in history, theory and techniques of graphic design, and practical exercises – work with type, colour, and composition in a design process. Searching for a sense of visual communication design in a correct, i. e. fast and not deformed, transmission of information to a user, in various graphic ways of expressing the subject of information, in the empathy into the outlines of the communication process, and into designers’ role in it.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
The attendance in lectures is recommended.
The attendance in workshop education is obligatory snf and checked by the lecturer. Students have to be present in scheduled hours in the schoolroom, work on given projects and wait for consultation, unless a lecturer gives any other individual plan. Students have to inform the lecturer in advance about his working-place in the scheduled education time (studio, workshops, modelling room) ; absence is not excused without this information. The excuse of absence is possible only due serious reasons such as illness. Unexcused absence can lead to give no accepting of project. Unexcused absence and absence greater than 50% /including excused lessons / may jeopardise accepting the project.

1. Basic information about the graphic design (visual communication design) - basic terms, fields of the g. d., its role and importance;
2. Typeface and typography – overview of the development of visual communication and typeface, Latin typefaces categories, type in the g. d., typographic design;
3. Symbol, logotype, and a trademark – history of symbol, terminology, symbol creation, law aspects;
4. Symbol - applied semiology;
5. Corporate identity programme – history, the CIP in a corporation and in publicity, the CIP creation and its use;
6. Corporate identity programme – design manual, advertising campaign;
7. Publicity design – history, means of publicity design: poster, leaflet, prospectus, advertisement, catalogue, publicity design in architecture – neon, big sized advertising, etc.;
8. Fields of graphic design in industry and environment – operation graphics, information and orientation graphics, service graphics and exhibition graphics;
9. A brief survey of the graphic design in the 19th century – epochs, styles, schools;
10. A brief survey of the graphic design in the 20th century 1 – epochs, styles, schools;
11. A brief survey of the graphic design in the 20th century 2 – epochs, styles, schools;

1. Assigning the main semester project – e. g. “Corporate Identity Programme” in two parts. (Example No. 1: “The CIP of an event: trade fair, exhibition, conference, workshop, competition, etc.” 1st part – symbol, colours, typeface selection. 2nd part – the CIP application: A1 size poster, tickets, invitation card, programme, web presentation etc. Example No. 2: “The CIP of a firm.” The 1st part – trademark, colours, typeface choice. The 2nd part –the CIP application: service graphics, cars, web design etc. including the concept of the design manual lay-out.) A written analysis of the topics of the assigned projects, documentation on similar themes, draft drawings and sketches of the 1st part.
In parallel with the main project the supplementary short-term tasks will be set and handed over;
