Course detail

Mechanical processes in silicate technology

FCH-MCO_TTSAcad. year: 2018/2019

The content of the subject fully covers the proccesses and their controll in the technology of silicites. In particular the transport and storage of solids, liquids and gases, grinding and grinders, milling and mills, drying and drying equipment, flitration of gases and liquids, wash of quarry stone, furnaces and furnace systems, calcinators, heating and cooling, transfer of substances within the plant site – conveyor belts, piping systems, centrifugation, separation and basic tests and analyses neccessary at the control and adjusting of silicite production are meant.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students have the view of the equipment and proccesses used in the technology of silicates. The student is able to explain the principles that work and evaluate the use of these methods in specific applications.

Prerequisites

The knowledge on chemical engineering, inorganic chemistry, physics and physical chemistry on the bachelors level are required. As are the basic physical principles applicable to these operations. Forces, electrical properties, magnetic properties atmospheric pressure, hydrostatic pressure, particle size, weight, phase and phase transformation.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To pass successfully from the subject Mechanical procceses in the technology of silicates students must master the subject matter defined in the subject content in at least 65 %. There is an oral examination from this subject.

Course curriculum

1. The introduction into the silicate production.
2. Exploitation, quarries, mines, grinding, milling.
3. Separation, transfer within the plant-site and haulage – solids, liquids, gases.
4. Heating, firing, furnaces, dry-kilns.
5. Cooling, temperature control.
6. Volume measurement, level gauges, regulations.
7. Service water.
8. Filtration, types of filters, filtration proccesses.
9. Centrifugation, washing of quarry-stone.
10. Silicate production management – cement plant, lime works.
11. Silicate production management – brick plant, ceramics factory.
12. Recapitulation.

Work placements

Not applicable.

Aims

The subject objective is to acquaint the students with the basic proccesses and their principles. Within the subject students shall get the view of the equipment which is used in the silicate industry and of the principles of the equipment‘s functioning. Also they shall get the view of the production and the volume capacity of silicates and their products within the Czech Republic and over the world.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance is not obligatory, solely the knowledge gained in corresponding semester will be evaluated.
