Syntheses of polymers
FCH-MCO_SPLAcad. year: 2018/2019
The lecture deals with theoretical principles of macromolecules formation by both polycondensation and polymerization reactions with attention to living polymerizations. Monomers - compounds able to form polymers - are discussed from different aspects. Mechanisms of raising active centers and possibilities of their transformation are summarized. The lecture compares aspects of mechanisms and kinetics of radical, anionic, cationic and coordination polymerizations. It deals with elementary initiation, propagation, transfer and termination reactions, the living polymerizations being accentuated. It describes reaction mechanisms of both standard and special copolymers formation and explains problematics of polycondensation and polyaddition reactions.

Language of instruction
1)Theoretical principles of macromolecules formation. 2) An overwiev of important monomers and their production. 3) Mechanisms of raising active centers and possibilities of their transformation.
4) Comparison of mechanisms and kinetics of radical, anionic, cationic and coordination polymerizations. 5) Elementary reactions of initiation, propagation, termination and transfer. 6) Mechanisms of living polymerizations.
7) Mechanisms and kinetics of standard and special copolymers formation. 8) Mechanisms and reaction kinetics of polycondensation and gradual polyaddition reactions.
The goal of the lecture “Polymer Syntheses” is to improve both theoretical and practical knowledge of students in the macromolecular chemistry field. The lecture deals with kinetics and reaction mechanisms of raising of polymers, and with procedures of their laboratory synthesis and industrial production.
