Biostatistics

This subject solves statistical evaluation of biological and chemical objects, statistics of data set, testing of the biopreparation effectiveness, correlation of variables, linear and nonlinear regression and applications in biological systems.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Results of the subject study will be:
a) theoretical knowledge of basic statistical apparatus for evaluation of results in biological and biochemical field,
b) the ability to apply statistical principles to solve practical problems,
c) skills to process results using statistical functions in excel,
d) gain of overview to apply bio-statistics outputs in other subjects of the discipline, science, research and work life,
e) competence to process the final student's work statistically correctly.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of mathematics. Basic skills of work in excel. Ability to analyze and process chemical and biological results.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lecture - (2 lessons per 2 weeks): frontal teaching with using demonstration methods (powerpoint).
Seminars (2 lessons per 2 weeks): workshop, individual work, discussion methods.
Electronic Support: The Biostatistics course developed in the Moodle e-learning system.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions to obtain of classified credit:
At the end of the semester will be the full-time credit test (electronically in moodle) for 50 points, minimum for success: 25 points.
In the sum, one can obtain for the subject 100 points (work in term 50 p + credit test 50 p), classification of the subject according to the ECTS scale.

2) Point estimates of mean
3) Interval estimates of mean
4) An assessment of the accuracy and precision of the results
5) Testing remoteness
6) Universal statistical tests
7) Testing the effectiveness of Biologicals
8) Correlation variables
9) Linear regression and the linearity test
10) Application of linear regression in the biotech practice
11) Polynomial regression to determine the degree of the polynomial
12) Systematization and elimination of errors

Aims

The aim of Biostatistics is to master the basic principles of evaluation and processing of biological processes results. To understand the common and different elements of biological and chemical view. To achieve the ability to apply basic statistical tests.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

During the term students will process applied tasks (full-time form in the seminars, combined form as correspondence tasks).
In total, 5 tasks, each of them has 10 points. Minimum for success: 5 points / task.
