Laboratory Classes in Physical Chemistry I

FCH-BCA_FCH1_PAcad. year: 2018/2019

1. General information, laboratory rules and safety.
In following 11 weeks students have to get through these laboratory problems:
2. Kinematic viscosity – concentration dependence.
3. Partial molar quantities.
4. Calorimetry.
5. Liquid-vapour equilibrium of two-component mixture.
6. Three-component liquid mixture.
7. Over-potential of hydrogen on metals.
8. Electrochemical cell - Nernst equation.
9. Cryoscopy.
10. Conductivity measurement.
11. Transport numbers.
12. Determination of pKa-value of organic acid.
13. Test + Credits.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students should obtain practical skills in basic experimental methods of chemical thermodynamics and electrochemistry and in experimental data assessment.

Prerequisites

basic knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry, chemical calculations

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Recommended optional programme components

Not applicable.

Recommended or required reading

Pekař M., Klučáková M., Veselý M., Čeppan M.: Fyzikální chemie a fotochemie. Praktikum. FCH VUT v Brně, Brno, 2007. (CS)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Laboratory exercise - 3 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

conditions of graded course-unit credit:
100% active participation in laboratory exercises
get through all laboratory tasks
laboratory reports of all task
classification of all laboratory reports (min. degree E)
classification of laboratory log (min. degree E)
written exam (min. degree E)
total classification min. degree E
classification of all laboratory reports
laboratory log
credit test
...In order to be awarded the course-unit credit students must prove 100% active participation in laboratory exercises and elaborate a paper on the presented themes. The exam is written and oral. In the written part a student compiles two main themes which were presented during the lectures and solves three examples. The oral part of the exam will contain discussion of tasks and possible supplementary questions.

Aims

The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with practical problems of thermodynamics and electrochemistry. The students should learn to use their theoretical knowledge of physical chemistry in solving of practical problems in laboratory.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance and activity at the seminars are required. One excused absence can be compensated for by attending a seminar with another group, or by attending in last week of the term.
