Course detail

Chemistry of Environmental Protection

FCH-BCA_COZPAcad. year: 2018/2019

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the state of the environment in the Czech Republic and the level of contamination of the individual components.

Language of instruction

Czech

Number of ECTS credits

3

Mode of study

Not applicable.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students on the basis of acquired knowledge learn to assess the level of environmental contamination. Knowledge of distribution will allow them to assess, whether there may be present certain types of pollutants in ecosystems. The students will be able to assess the state of the Czech Republic's environment in a European context.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of general chemistry, anoganic and organic chemistry and ecology.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Written test and oral exam of the curriculum.

Course curriculum

Block 1:
Information on the current state of the environment in the Czech Republic, assessment of its strengths and weaknesses and comparison of the detected level of contamination with Czech and EU legislation; Expected development trends related to the protection of individual environmental compartments.
Block 2:
Basic terms and relationships characterising behaviour and fate of substances in environment, persistence of substances in environment, bioaccumulation, biomagnification, biodegradation and biotransformation. Monitoring, targeted detection, inspection of food and feed currently performed in the Czech Republic.
Block 3:
Important groups of environment pollutants and their characteristic.
Block 4:
Characteristics of abiotic and biotic components of environment: atmosphere, hydrosphere, pedosphere, biosphere.

Work placements

Not applicable.

Aims

Students familiarize themselves with the basic characteristics of the environment (the abiotic and biotic components). They will learn about the main types of inorganic and organic pollutants and their distribution in the different environmental compartments. The basis of the subject is the information on the state of the individual environmental compartments from the point of view of the Environmental Report of the Czech Republic.
