Microsoft Windows Desktop Systems

Introduction to administering Windows, introduction to network technologies TCP/IP, IP addresses, introduction to DNS, NetBIOS and DHCP services. Administration of Windows: user accounts, file systems, user rigths vs. permissions, shared resources and printing, user environment (profiles, Group Policy), disk quotas, hardware and device drivers, troubleshooting system issues and backup, software installation, remote administration and Remote Desktop, system security (passwords, EFS, domains, Windows Firewall), auditing, security policies and templates, installation: unattended instalation CD based, network based, Service Packs, introduction to Windows Deployment Services, Windows Update, administration tasks scripting.

Ability to implement, manage, maintain and support Microsoft Windows desktop systems as well as troubleshoot common issues.

Course curriculum

1. Installation and upgrade, user data migration.
2. System image creation, virtual hard drive management.
3. System image management and deployment.
4. Network (IPv4 and IPv6 protocols, network management tools, wireless networks).
5. Windows Firewall, remote management and application compatibility.
6. Resource sharing and security (file and printer sharing, offline files, NTFS permissions, EFS, BitLocker).
7. Mid-semester test.
8. Authentication and authorization, user account control (UAC), application restriction.
9. Device, disk and power management.
10. Monitoring and performance, WMI.
11. Backup and restore.
12. BranchCache, DirectAccess and VPN connections.
13. Windows Update and Internet Explorer.

Aims

To obtain strong knowledge about administering, implementing and designing Microsoft Windows desktop systems and network technologies based on the technologies. Course will provide students with hands on practice at lab environment. Course will provide guidance for preparation for Microsoft certification exams for desktop systems.
