Functional and Nanostructural Materials

The coars is concerned with the following topics:Introduction to non-conventional and advanced materials. Composites. Functionally graded materials. Coatings,layers and superfilms.
Nanocrystalline and nanostructured materials.Smart materials. Shape memory aloys. Superplasticity. Superconductivity. Metallic glasses and metallic foams. Powder metallurgy.
Ultralight alloys (Al-Li and Mg-Li).Intermetalics.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will gain the most recent information on the basic characteristics, processing technologies, performance and application of non-conventional
materials, materials with extreme parameters, and materials for the third millennium such as metallic glass and foam, nanonstructured materials and


Students are expected to have general knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry acquired at secondary school. They should have the basic knowledge of technological processes of iron and non-iron metals and their alloy.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions for awarding the course-unit credit: Having done all the assigned topics in exercises and preparation of the respective written tasks.
The exam has a written and an oral part. In the oral part, students answers three questions.

The course objective is to make students familiar with a group of materials that feature specific performance properties or extreme parameters, and with a
group of so-called materials for third-millennium technology. Students get a practical knowledge of all new advanced (mostly metallic) materials with the
exception of ceramic and polymer materials, which are dealt with in separate courses.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Compulsory attendance at exercises, preparing written reports and reading a paper on an assigned topic. Absence from exercises is dealt with individually.
