Environmental risks in transport

The course is focused on the currently very topical issue, particularly on the impact of transport on the environmental components, including human health.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Graduation of the course the student gain the knowledge about various aspects of the impact of transport on the environment, assessment of these impact and measures to mitigate its negative effects. Is acquainted with current levels of environmental burden by anthropogenic sources with the emphasis on transportation, identification of these risks, their assessment and abatement opportunities. Furthermore gain knowledge about existing legislation in this area, not only in the CR but also the EU, regulations for the registration and regulation of the use of hazardous chemical substances and their transportation (ADR, RID etc.), about categorization and assessment of waste properties, about the problems of health and safety at work in the transport sector, etc.

Prerequisites

Elementary knowledge of high school mathematic, physics, chemistry and biology.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching is carried out through lectures consist of interpretations of basic principles, methodology of given discipline, problems and their exemplary solutions.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam will consist of the written and oral part. The condition of the oral exam is fulfillment of conditions of the written test.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction to the issue of risks, analysis and assessment of risks.
2. Human factor as a source of risk. Risk management. Prediction of risks.
3. Sustainable development principles. Resource consumption related to the transport.
4. Environmental monitoring- methods, environmental indicators.
5. Strategy of the environmental care. Economic instruments of the environmental care.
6. Quality management in the field of transport’s impact on the environment.
7. Instrumental analytical methods for the quality assessment of the environmental components in connection with transport.
8. Transport and ecological burden of territory. Contamination criteria of selected environmental elements.
9. Air protection. Measurement of emissions and air pollutants, monitoring.
10. Waste, categorization, obligation in waste management. Transport of hazardous chemical substances.
11. Reducing of the energy consumption. Noise and vibration in transport.
12. Hygienic requirements for working environment. Occupational diseases in transport.
13. Methods for assessing the impact of transport on the environment and health (EIA/SEA, dispersion, noise studies etc.).

Aims

The aim of course is to give students basic knowledge about the concept of sustainable transport. Learn to actively seek and treat risks associated with traffic. Ability to minimize negative impact on the environment in accordance with the current legislation in practical activities in transport.
