Course detail

Concrete structures

ÚSI-2BCBKAcad. year: 2017/2018

The course is devoted to problems of modern methods of design, assessment and verification of load-bearing behaviour of concrete structures. It is based on the knowledge of basic "dimensioning" approaches for design of concrete structures according to the ultimate limit state (using partial safety factors) and it develops these skills in modelling and verification, and increases the relevancy models using Monte Carlo methods, optimization methods and artificial intelligence methods. It deals with the principles of technical risks of concrete structures, their preventive treatment and management.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After completing the course student will be able to navigate and independently carry out design of concrete structures taking into account the risks and environmental aspects.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of design of concrete structures according to limit states according to ČSN EN 1992-1-1 is required.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching is carried out through lectures and seminars. Lectures consist of interpretations of basic principles, methodology of given discipline, problems and their exemplary solutions. Seminars particularly support practical mastery of subject matter presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

A condition for granting credit is a semestral work.
The test will consist of written and oral part. The condition of the oral part is meeting conditions of the written part.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction and definition of the subject, "Concrete Structures", the definition of reliability, durability and fitness for a load-bearing concrete structure, the concept of risk in relation to the concrete structures.
2. Environmental aspects of design in relation to the concrete structures and sustainable development, the associated risks.
3. Mathematical and expert methods, determination of the probability of failure of concrete structures.
4. Degree of reliability and failure risk estimation in the Czech and European regulations for the design of concrete structures.
5. Standards related to risk (forming and the occurrence of faults) of concrete structures. Danger and risk. The precautionary principle. Expert methods.
6. People and actions averse and reverse to the risk of faults of concrete structures. Decisions on risk. Numerical expressions of risk.
7. Design assessment methodology in terms of their life cycle (life time assessment), the type of assessment methodologies life time cost.
8. Examples for different types of dimensioning of simple tasks - the ultimate limit state and serviceability.
9. Reliability of structures and systems making models for simple structures.
10. Examples of application of reliability analysis structure (system) for supporting structures of the monolithic skeleton single or multi-storey buildings.
11. Defects and failures - concrete slab construction, slatted and lacunar ceilings, retaining walls.
12. Defects and failure - concrete structure in water management.
13. Defects and failures, strengthening and rehabilitation. Optimization of the design.
