Learning outcomes of the course unit

Specifically, the course focuses on extension of general and specific vocabulary in the fields of organic and inorganic chemistry, laboratory equipment, biochemistry, use of laboratory instruments, mathematical expressions, physical chemistry and extension of competence in the field of grammar with the focus on expressing future, use of present simple tense in special texts, gerund, articles in special texts, conditionals and development of four skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing instructions and verbalization of graphical data) lower B1 level, with the regard to the future preparation for mastering English at the level corresponding to CEFR B1.

Prerequisites

Command of English at the B1 lower CEFR level. Credit in English for Chemists I.

Co-requisites

English for chemists III and IV(B1), Organic Chemistry II, other courses for second year students delivered in English.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Language exercise - 1 teaching hour per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.
Teaching methods: lecture, activating methods, individualized learning, support of learning styles and strategies essential for life-long enhancement of language competence, problem learning.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To acquire the credit, the following requirements must be fulfilled: Attendance in lessons (1 absence is allowed), completion of individual tests during the semester, satisfactory performance at seminars, bringing a printed/electronic copy of study materials into seminars, successful completion of final credit test (75%), essay on preparation of an arbitrary compound.

Credit test will be focused on the following (in terms of English for Chemists II electronic textbook) items: Vocabulary for selected branches of chemistry (synonyms, antonyms) - organic chemistry, physical chemistry, general and inorganic chemistry, sophisticated devices and their operation, biochemistry, mathematical expressions and laboratory equipment. Grammar (e.g. gerund, expressing future, articles, if-clauses, present simple in technical texts etc). Development of language skills: writing (e.g. instructions, notes, schemes, graphs and equations based on a text, etc.), reading (individual information and summary - instrument operation etc.), listening (related to a topic discussed, particular information, general understanding, main ideas, summary,etc.). Students will also match words with their synonyms and do a cloze test.
