Chemical Informatics II

FCH-BCT_CHI2Acad. year: 2017/2018

The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with general and practical aspects of the scientific information processing in any form, with emphasis on chemical subjects and electronic representation of information. It deals with feasibility and methods of electronic presentation of chemical information such as primary and secondary information resources, patents and computer applications for information processing. The practical part concentrated on the most important chemical data bases such as Chemical Abstracts, Belstein, Science Citation Index and others is following the general introductory part. The special emphasis is put on a connection between theoretical and practical aspects of the processing and utilization of chemical information.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After passing this course, students have to be able to work out a background research using libraries and internet information sources, make tables, graphs out of gained experimental data, draw chemical structural formulas and other graphical objects and sort data into basic database. All these skills they should be able to use for preparation of long, formated document or presentation in form of lecture or web site.

Prerequisites

Basic skills and experience with MS Windows operation systems, Internet, computer typography, creation of document and data processing.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Computer exercise - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. In the written part student has to pass a theoretical test to get to the oral part of the exam. During the oral part student presents a practical project. Supplementary questions are possible.
