Laboratory Classes of Surface Treatment of Materials

FCH-BCO_PUM_PAcad. year: 2017/2018

The subject is focused on select material & technology problems of surface treatments, with the emphasis put on the system approach to the methods of deterioration material evaluation and to the methods of evaluation of surface treatments duality. The main stress is laid on acquiring basic knowledge necessary for classification of construction materials resistance against environment influences and for the option of suitable surface treatments against environment influences, firstly of paint systems and another protective and decorative coatings.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Learning outcomes and practice of surface treatment of materials consists of a set of selected methods of making and testing finishes, allowing students to apply knowl-edge in practical exercises to address specific projects finishing of industrial products and consumer goods.
Above all, it is a knowledge of the basic principles of testing in the field of materi-als processing degraded by the environment.
Of the basic types of finishes, especially in terms of their designation, functions and applications of the products of different material composition and structural ar-rangement are projected output pre-edit process knowledge. Knowledge of protec-tive coatings, based on the description of the basic systems of industrially produced paints metallic coatings and new alloy coatings and composites (dispersion) coatings.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to be familiar with the basic type of metallic and non-metallic materials, with the relationship between their structure and physico-chemical properties and basic type of surface treatments. Attainments of simultaneous legislation of surface engineering and methods of matematical statistics are an advantage.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Laboratory exercise - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The course final grade is binary pass/fail statement. The pass grade will be granted on the basis of:
- 100% attendance of the course (lessons missed for medical and serious personal reasons need to be substituted at the end of the semester)
- submitting reports from all the lessons
- final presentation of reports

Aims

The goal is to provide a targeted audience interested in finishing materials, basic professional information on selected methods of assessing the degree of degradation of materials and testing methods and selected finishes, too.
It is based on the assumption that the theoretical knowledge of the degradation of materials and finishes, the students acquire in the course of lectures Surface treat-ments of materials.
The course is divided into 13 basic topics. Of these, the first four set to informs stu-dents with the basic approaches to materials degradation processes by the environ-ment. In view of the limited scope of the subject topics are focused on metals and plastics.
Eight of these topics introduces on the mastering basic methods of making and testing of coatings, especially in terms of their basic quality characteristics.
Problem areas are supplemented by the last topic – visiting professional workplace, in order to provide students with a more comprehensive view of reality surface engi-neering in industrial practice.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

100 % attendance of the classes is compulsory. lessons missed for medical and serious personal reasons need to be substituted at the end of the semester.
In the beginning of the lab lesson, the theoretical knowledge and preparation of students is briefly checked by means of a few oral questions.
A written report summarizing the work procedure, measured data and their interpretation must be composed for each of the 12 tasks. It must be submitted by the end of the semester at latest, preferably the following week after the task has been passed. Unsatisfactory reports are returned for corrections.
