Learning outcomes of the course unit

Results of the subject study will be:
a) theoretical knowledge of basic bioengineering apparatus,
b) the ability to balance bioreactors systems,
c) skills to process bioengineering results and to apply them on practice tasks,
d) gain of overview about present situation in the science and research in bioengineering field,
e) competence to process the final knowledge in another subjects of the study field and in student's final works too.

Prerequisites

The best important is the basic knowledge of the biochemical and microbiological apparatus, first of all are necessary the topics of enzymes, cell morphology and physiology. The ability to apply principles of chemical engineering, in particular the physical description of unit operations in reactors, is also required.

Co-requisites

Co-requisites are not required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lecture - (2 lessons per week): frontal teaching with using demonstration methods (powerpoint).
Seminars (2 lessons per week): workshop, individual work, discussion methods.
Electronic Support: The Bioengineering I. course developed in the Moodle e-learning system.

Work placements

Work placement is not part of the subject study.

Aims

The aim of Bioengineering I is to master the basic bioengineering knowledge of bioreactor systems. To understand the kinetics process in reactors. To achieve the ability to solve balancing industrial and laboratory tasks in the field of fermentative and enzyme technologies.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

During the semester students will process the applied tasks (full-time form in the exercises, combined form as correspondence tasks).
You can obtain up to 20 points from your assignments. Minimum for success: 10 points.
Another continuous check is oral presentation of bioengineering topics from specialized periodicals (both forms of study personally).
Up to 10 points can be obtained from the presentation. Minimum for success: 5 points.

Recommended optional programme components

In addition, students can consult the bioengineering problems of their bachelor thesis during this subject study.
