Strategic management in the market economy and competitive environment is a crucial aspect of company success. Decision about strategy, if the selected strategy should lead the company to the required target, has to be based on solid strategic analysis. Only on this base, the management can generate possible solutions, choose and implement an optimal variant. Within the process of strategic management, the management of a company considers factors such as available resources, mission and goals, eternal and internal environment of company. Strategy created and understood this way can represent a good basis for ensuring the competitiveness of a company.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will have a clear idea of strategic management process and principals of strategic thinking. They will be made familiar with analytical tools intended for strategic analysis of external and internal factors. Students will learn the methodology of formulation of strategy based on hierarchical strategy structure - corporate, business and functional strategy. Students will also learn the methods applied for selection, realization and evaluation of strategy.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to have basic knowledge of methods used in planning, organizing, stimulation and control. They have to understand basic function of company. Knowledge of basic marketing methods is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course contains lectures that explain basic principles, problems and methodology of the discipline, and exercises that promote the practical knowledge of the subject presented in the lectures.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Hodnocení se odvíjí od získaného počtu bodů. Body je možné získat za aktivitu ve cvičeních, zpracování a obhajobu projektu a zkoušku (písemná ústním dozkoušením). Bodování jednotlivých částí je následující:
Zpracování a obhajoba projektu až 70 bodů:
• Hodnocení ze cvičení – hodnotí cvičící – až 20 bodů – pro získání zápočtu je třeba získat alespoň 10 bodů. Hodnotí se: úroveň rozpracování zadání (až 12 bodů), příprava na konzultace na cvičeních a realizované konzultace (až 8 bodů – 4 x 2). Minimálně jedna konzultace zadání je povinná.
• Obhajoba projektu – hodnotí přednášející – až 50 bodů – probíhá formou týmové diskuze, tým dostane zpětnou vazbu k projektu. Studenti musí prokázat jak znalost projektu a řešeného problému, tak znalost odpovídající teorie, tj. při obhajobě budou položeny i otázky týkající se teorie, která je v projektu uplatněna.
Písemná zkouška s ústním dozkoušením až 50 bodů.
První část obsahuje 10 otázek s volitelnými odpověďmi A až E (20 minut), druhá část pak dvě otevřené otázky (60 minut). U otázek s volitelnými odpověďmi bude pouze jedna odpověď správná. Správná odpověď je hodnocena 1 bodem, špatná odpověď -1 bodem a žádná odpověď 0 body. Pro zpracování části s otázkami s volitelnými odpověďmi není možné používat žádné podklady. Otevřené otázky jsou hodnoceny každá maximálně 20 body. Zpracování otevřených otázek probíhá formou „open book“. Následná ústní rozprava je zaměřena na případné doplňující otázky ke zpracovanému řešení a dává studentům možnost reagovat na hodnocení písemné části.
Informace k projektu
Při zpracování projektu studenti řeší v týmech (3-8 členů) analytický, nebo aplikační projekt. Detailní specifikace typů projektu viz e-learning. Složení týmů a zadání projektu je třeba odevzdat elektronicky nejpozději do konce 6. týdne semestru cvičícímu. Před odevzdáním zadání je povinná minimálně jedna konzultace zadání a zadání musí být cvičícím schváleno. Tým musí obecné zadání upravit a specifikovat. Termíny obhajob jsou plánovány na první dva týdny zkouškového. Délka jedné obhajoby je 60 – 90 minut. Obhajoby se musí účastnit celý tým. Chybějící členové musí obhajobu absolvovat v náhradním termínu. Studenti odevzdají písemné zpracování projektu nejpozději týden před termínem obhajoby mailem přednášejícímu. Pro odevzdání je preferován formát pdf. Pro název souboru použijte příjmení vedoucího člena týmu. Tým je hodnocen jako celek a pro individuální úpravu hodnocení jsou zohledněny odpovědi členů týmu na položené otázky. Součástí hodnocení může být i vzájemné hodnocení členů týmu, které může snížit bodové hodnocení členů týmu, kteří neodvedli odpovídající výkon – hodnotící tabulka bude v e-learningu.
Penalizace: Pozdní odevzdání zadání: -10b / Pozdní odevzdání projektu: -10b / Chybějící povinná konzultace: -10b
Výsledná klasifikace je založena na celkovém počtu bodů – body ze cvičení, obhajoba a zkouška. Opravné termíny se řídí pravidly VUT. Minimální počet získaných bodů v součtu je 50 bodů.

4. Analysis of internal factors of competitive advantage based on functional approach. Application of value chain as a tool for analysis and development of competitive advantage.
5. Application of resource based view and core competences in the process of identification and development of competitive advantage.
6. Definition of business strategy. Competitive character of business strategy. Business strategy based on application of business model.
7. Formulation of vision and mission. Corporate strategy in the context of diversification. Restructuring of company. Function of corporate strategy in development of strategic competitiveness.
8. Hierarchy of company strategy in the context of internationalization activities.
9. Strategic development based on external cooperation. Strategic alliances and networks. Strategic aspects of mergers.
10. Implementation of strategy. Organizational aspects of strategy implementation. Strategic control. Strategic leadership and role of management in strategy implementation.

Aims

The objective of the course is to make students familiar with the strategic management process in market and competitive environment. The course is focused on explanation of analytical tools and possibility of their application and on formulation of strategy and its realization.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance at seminars is evaluated. The attendance at the defence of project is compulsory. The attendance at lectures is recommended.
