Environmental Management

The course deals with macroeconomic and microeconomic aspects of the environment - sustainable development indicators, strategies for sustainable development in the EU and the Czech Republic. The main emphasis is on voluntary environmental tools and their applications in business conditions (environmental management systems according to ISO and EMAS, cleaner production, life cycle assessment and product) and environmental business economics (environmental management accounting, environmental costs, accounting of sustainable development, sustainability reporting).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will gain theoretical knowledge of sustainable development and voluntary environmental tools. Based on a gained knowledge, students will be able to solve environmental, social and economic tasks in a company.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to have general economic knowledge.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures consist of an explanation of basic principles, methodology of the discipline, problems and their solutions.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Knowledge is verified by a written test and elaboration of a team project.

The written test consists of questions from theoretical and practical elements defined by lectures in the field of environmental management. The student must obtain at least 15 points from 30.

Skills of the student are tested on the basis of the team project on a given topic. The student must obtain at least 15 points from 30.

1. Introduction. Voluntary instruments environment. The concept of environmental management-EN ISO 14000 and EMAS I, II, III.
2. Cleaner production.
3. Method of Life Cycle Assessment-LCA-practical example.
4. Eco-labeling.
6. Environmental reporting.
7. Presentation of projects.
8. Presentation of projects.


Seminars:
1. Case study standard ISO 14 000
2. Case study of the implementation of LCA in the company.
3. Case study of Eco-labeling.
4. Case study - Assessment of the impact on the environment EIA.
5. Case study - environmental accounting and reporsting.

Aims

Object of Environmental Management is to give students basic knowledge about environmental aspects of business management.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

During the semester work on their team project and they must defend it on the lact lecture. In the case of excused absence from seminars, teacher in justified cases can set an alternative task.
