Learning outcomes of the course unit

Overview of the history and aspects of sound-art, sound ecology, field- recording, and experimental sound making. They will learn about the crucial works and artists. Listening. Analysis.

Course curriculum

1) Freeing the sound. Concepts, manifestos, works, and representatives of futurism and musique concrete. Listening, discussion.
2) Soundscapes – introduction to the concept of soundscapes and the issues of sound ecology. R.M. Schefer. Listetning walks, field-recording, listening practices.
3) Electro-acoustic sound art. The impact of new technologies on sound aesthetics. Electronic music – artificial and popular. The roots of independent dance music. The contemporary scene. Listening, discussion.
4) Sound installations. Important personalities (Bernhard Leitner, Bill Fontana, Ryoji Ikeda).

Aims

During the winter semeester, we will focus on the history of sound art and theoretical aspects of soud art in the wides scope. Students will be encouraged to develop their critical and analytical listening skills and sound perception. We will record on site (outdoors) and students will prepare their own sound composition.
