Students are made familiar with the details of profiles of the greatest personalities in jazz music and with the development of Czechoslovak jazz from the thirties to the present.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will be able to:
- name the greatest personalities of the pre-war world jazz and describe their works,
- name the greatest personalities of post-war world jazz music and describe their works,
- name personalities of contemporary international jazz and describe their works.
- describe the origins of Czechoslovak jazz and its main leaders,
- name Czechoslovak jazz personalities from the post-war era to the present.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic concepts of musical acoustics, tempo, expression and dynamic signs, and musical instruments tuning is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in Article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
- Lectures consist of an explanation accompanied by recordings, photographs and films.
Participation in lectures is recommended.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The evaluation of study results follows the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and the Dean's Regulation on the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. Up to 100 points are given for the final written examination, and it is necessary to earn at least 70 points for its successful completion. The exam is aimed at knowledge of the history of jazz according to the syllabuses of the History of Jazz 1 and 2.

1. The profiles of the greatest personalities in jazz music origins: Louis Armstrong and others,
2.-4. The swing era: Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Woody Herman,
5.-6. Personalities of the bebop era, cool jazz, etc.: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Dave Brubeck,
7.-8. Personalities of the jazz-rock era and fusions: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and more,
9. The origins of the development of Czechoslovak Jazz: R. A. Dvorský, Jan Rychlík,
10. Czechoslovak post-war Big Band era: Karel Vlach, Karel Krautgartner,
11. The Gustav Brom Big Band and its main personalities: Jaromír Hnilička, Mojmír Bártek etc.,
12. Karel Velebný, Jiří Stivín,
13. Zdeněk Zdeněk and other current leaders of Czech jazz.

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the persons of the world and Czechoslovak and Czech jazz music.
