Video and Multimedia Technology

Students become familiar with the fundametals of mathematical description of color lights and its use in creation of analog and digital video signals. The course continues by explanation of the principle of image scanning devices and displays, description of the format and properties of different analog and digital intergaces. Emphasis is put on explanation of the principle of source codecs and their practical application. Student acquire knowledge of the methods applicable to measurement of video quality.
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The graduate is able to:
- explain the representation of color lights in various color spaces and compute color coordinates in color mixing,
- describe the properties and the generation of video signal,
- explain the priciple of operation in image sensors of different types and different displays,
- explain and apply the tools of image, video and audio source codecs,
- use the appropriate interfaces and signal formats for interconnecting multimedia devices,
- analyze properties of a given multimedia system.
Students registering for the course should be able to explain the basic principles of digital signal processing (sampling, quantization, coding) and use the fundamental mathematical apparatus of derivation and integration. Generally, the knowledge of the Bachelor's degree level is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Teaching methods include lectures and practical laboratories. Students solve individual exercise during the semester.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
During the semester, students can obtain up to 30 points for their active work in laboratory and elaborating individual work and further 10 points in a test. The final exam is awarded by up to 60 points.

3. Analog television standards PAL and NTSC. Analog interfaces used in video technology.
4. Devices for capturing of video signals.
5. Displays. CRT tubes, LCD, OLED and plasma panels, projection systems.
6. Digitizing video signals. Digital interfaces.
7. Digital video compression. Standards JPEG, MPEG1, MPEG2.
8. Modern compression standards, part 1. MPEG4 Part 2, MPEG4 Part 10.
9. Modern compression standards, part 2. Dirac, SMPTE VC-1, H.265. Digital audio processing and compression.
10. Multimedia transmission in IP networks.
11. Video recording - Magnetic tapes, optical discs CD, DVD, BD, players and recorders.
12. Objective and subjective video quality assessment.
13. Trends and perspectives in video technology. 3DTV.
Lectures are aimed at presenting the methods and technical means for scanning, display, recording, processing and measurement of analog and, in particular, digital audiovisual signals.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course anually.
