Music Theory 2

Students will become familiar with the techniques of classical harmony (chords treatment for four voices, voices possibilities for movement, joining chords, modulation, harmonizing melodies).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will be able to:
- describe musical intervals, scales and modes,
- analyze chords and basic harmonic connections,
- explain the terms tonality and atonality,
- explain the terms rhythm and meter,
- explain the differences in timbre of individual musical instruments, the scheme of musical instruments and assign musical instruments to them,
- describe the style era of historical music and name its main representatives,
- describe music genres of the 20th century and name its main representatives.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic concepts of musical acoustics, tempo, expression and dynamic signs, and musical instruments tuning is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Examinations.
- Lectures have character of explanation accompanied with score sheet samples and with listening of recordings.
- Exercises support practical acquiring of themes presented at lectures in form of practical work with active participation of students.
Participation at lectures is recommended. Participation at other ways of instruction is checked.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of study results follows Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and Dean's Regulation to the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. Up to 100 points is given for the final oral examination and it is necessary to get at least 50 points for its successful completion. The exam is aimed at knowledge of music theory according to syllabus of subjects Music Theory 1 and 2.

1.-2. four voices adjustment chords, chord position, the possibility of moving the vote, rules spojvání chords
3.-5. fallacy, characterized in joint minor
6. Turn the chords and their joints
7.-10. joining sptakordů
11.-13. modulation, harmonizing melodies

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with basic questions of classical harmony (four voices akrodů treatment, the possibility of moving the vote, joining chords, modulation, harmonizing melodies).

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

To obtain the credit it is necessary to complete at least 10 exercises during semester. Other forms of the checked instructions are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantee of the course and updated for every academic year.
