Music Directing 2

The recording of musical works in a broadcasting studio and in situ, the recording of concerts with the broadcast vehicle and with digital transmission equipment. Analog and digital recording chains, dual- and multi-track recording, recording media, methods of registration of takes, their cutting and linking. The process of mastering and compiling the final product - master tape - and document - mastering order.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will be able to:
- create a record of a musical work in a broadcasting studio or in other spaces,
- create a recording of a concert with the broadcast vehicle and transmission equipment,
- name and describe the components of analog and digital recording chains and their characteristics from a music director’s point of view,
- describe the sound recording mediums and methods of registration of takes, their cutting and linking,
- create a final sound recording - master tape - and its documentation.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic concepts of musical acoustics, tempo, expression and dynamic signs, and musical instruments tuning is required as well as musical intervals, scales and modes, chords and basic harmonic connections, and timbres. Students who enrol on the course should be able to analyze song regularities, assess the implications for the interpretation, describe musical instruments in terms of creating tone and techniques, and create instrumentation study for combinations of instruments.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
- Exercises provide the explanation of case studies and team work in music studio.
Participation at exercises is checked.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of study results follows Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and Dean's Regulation to the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. Credit is given successful demonstration of knowledge in interview.

7. Recording chains - analog, digital, dual- and multi-track recording.

10. – 11. The process of mastering, the preparation of the final product - master tape.
12. – 13. Assembly of the final document - mastering order, birth certificate.

Aims

The aim of the course is to teach students to make recordings of musical works, familiarize them with the recording and mastering process chains from the point of view of a music director.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

To obtain the credit it is necessary to complete at least 10 exercises during semester. Other forms of the checked instructions are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantee of the course and updated for every academic year.
