Intermediate Level English (exam)

For this exam, the two optional subjects BYA5 and BYA6 as well as the bridging course PK3 are offered, in which students acquire the required knowledge and skills. The exam is based on the contents of the book New English File Intermediate, by Clive Oxenden and Christina Latham-Koenig, Oxford University Press 2006.
The BY51 exam is conducted orally with pairs of students and lasts up to 25 minutes. It may be shorter for students who have clearly not yet reached the correct level.
The exam tests speaking skills such as interaction, pronunciation and the ability to construct connected sentences to give information or opinions on a certain topic. It also tests listening and reading ability, as well as grammar and vocabulary.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The aim of this exam is to assess if students have reached the Intermediate (B1 - Threshold) level of the Common European Framework established by the Council of Europe.
The student should be able to:
-generally understand information about familiar topics and situations, such as those met at work, in school, in free time etc. providing they are expressed in a clear and straightforward manner.
- be able to use English to communicate successfully in most situations encountered when travelling abroad.
- be able to create a simple connected text with a simple context.
- be able to describe experiences and events, ambitions, hopes and plans, and to briefly explain or justify their ideas and statements.
- successfully complete intermediate level grammar exercises

Prerequisites

Entry level B1. Students should be able to use the past and present (including present perfect) tenses to talk about their lives, and some future forms to discuss plans. They should be able to ask questions, give personal information, understand clear English related to familiar subjects. They should also be able to compare things using adjectives, make 1st conditional structures, use countable/uncountable nouns and some modal verbs. They should also be able to manage simple functional transactions in shops, restaurants and while travelling. They should be able to use the present perfect to express experience, as well as describe long - lasting or temporary situations in their life; modals to express permission and obligation in connection with rules and behaviour; passives as typically used to describe processes, origins and materials; future forms to predict and plan actions in the future; conditionals to speculate about possible future situations and general theoretical ones.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

To help students prepare for this exam the optional subjects BYA5 and BYA6 and the optional bridging course PK3 are offered by the Department of Languages. Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. In these courses, grammar and vocabulary is practiced in an interactive way, with the emphasis on conversation. Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The BY51 exam is conducted orally with pairs of students and lasts up to 25 minutes. It may be shorter for students who have clearly not yet reached the correct level. BY51 involves asking and answering general questions, discussing a task with a colleague, speaking about a picture alone and answering questions on grammar, vocabulary and short texts. There may also be a short written part. The pass mark is 50%.
