Pre-Intermediate Level English (exam)

For this exam, the optional subjects BYA1, BYA2, BYA3 and BYA4 are offered, in which students aquire the required knowledge and skills. The exam is based on the contents of the books New English File Elementary, Clive Oxenden, Christina Latham-Koenig, Oxford University Press 2004 and New English File Pre-Intermediate, Clive Oxenden, Christina Latham-Koenig, Oxford University Press 2005. The exam consists of two parts: the written part which tests the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary and reading, writing and listening skills; and the oral part which tests the ability to speak shortly about a given topic and react to questions.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

This exam corresponds to A2+ level according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students will show that their knowledge of English language has reached the level when they are able to make themselves understood both orally and in written form in everyday situations.

Grammar and vocabulary covered in the New English File Elementary and Pre-intermediate textbooks.

Exam

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam consists of two parts: 1) a written part which tests the student’s knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as reading, writing and listening skills; and 2) an oral part which tests the student’s ability to speak simply on certain topics and respond to questions. The English Department of the Institute of Social Sciences uses an internal scale for the classification of exam results adapted for language testing.

For this subject the optional subjects BYA1, BYA2, BYA3 and BYA4 are offered by the Department of Languages and optional bridging courses PK1 and PK2.

Aims

This exam corresponds to A2+ level according to CEFR.

It is tested whether students command the basic vocabulary from general English, basic grammar rules, whether they can communicate in everyday life situations.
