Concrete Technology – laboratories

Performance of basic technological tests of aggregates according to the valid Czech Standards ČSN. Practical testing of selected standard methods for consistency determination according to valid Standard ČSN ISO on particularly defined and prepared concrete mixes. Effect of water quantity in concrete under constant dose of cement on workability of concrete and on strength of concrete after 7 days of standard hardening. Practical verification of selected technological variables influence on concrete mixing, and on the workability of fresh concrete, Rb/7d, volume mass/7d and shrinkage of concrete in time dependence during standard storing.
Determination of fresh concrete physical properties after 28 days of standard hardening.
Determination of aggregates grain size composition and of plasticizing additives on rheological properties of fresh concrete and on the strength of hardened concrete under selected constant variables.
Determination of minimum porosity.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The aim of the subject is obtaining practical knowledge about the properties of fresh and hardened concrete. Mastering the design methods of the concrete composition. Verifying knowledge test procedures input components of concrete and familiar with the procedures for determining the parameters of fresh and hardened concrete. Practical verification of theoretical design of concrete composition. Practical implementation and evaluation of tests of fresh and hardened concrete

Prerequisites

Theoretical fundamentals of concrete technology, theoretically and practically mastered methods for testing concrete components.

Co-requisites

Theoretical knowledge of binders, aggregates and concrete additives

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Exercises include computational part. and part focused on practical laboratory experiments performed by students

• Exercises content also practical examples.
Students work in labs in teams and then present the results in the form of protocols.
Students are required to calculate specified exercises individually, the correctness of which is verified by supervisor of seminars

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Completion of all exercises except for excused absences. Submission of all reports in content and scope.
Final-test with a minimum of 60% of the total marks.

4.Proposal for concrete composition using natural aggregates.
5.Testing of 4 standard methods of consistency determination.
6.Practical assignment of concrete mix composition for the given class, consistency, type of cement and aggregates.
7.Study trip in a transport-concrete plant.
8.Checking of water quantity influence in concrete under constant dose of cement on concrete workability and on concrete strength after 7 days of standard hardening.
9.Checking of plasticizing additives influence on properties of fresh and hardened concrete
10.Quality control of concrete utilizing mathematical statistics.
11.Determination of the relation influence between fine and coarse aggregates on the consistency of fresh concrete and on the strength of hardened concrete.
12.Analysis of fresh concrete.
13.Determination of aerating additives effect on concrete properties.

Aims

The aim of the subject is obtaining practical knowledge about fresh and hardened concrete properties. Acquire test procedures of input components and parameters of fresh and hardened concrete. Practical verification of theoretical design for concrete composition.
