Course detail

Highways II

FAST-BM02Acad. year: 2013/2014

Materials and technologies for the road construction. Getting knowledge about basic materials which are used in the road construction (soils, aggregates, bitumens, asphalts, concretes etc.), their properties and quality demands.
In connection with the material properties production and building-in technologies of particular construction layers of flexible and rigid pavements are going over, further also test systems for quality control.
Principles of the road construction design according to catalogue.
Road distresses and road material recycling technologies.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student is able to manage the goal of the subject by getting an overview over road construction materials, its testing and various technologies for construction, maintenance and repair of pavement structures. Further the student will become familiar with the system of quality in the field of road construction, the recycling technologies and designing of road structures.

Prerequisites

Basic general knowledge about construction materials and construction physics are required.

Co-requisites

Not required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures, practical classes and self-study assignments. Attendance at lectures is optional, but attendance at classes is compulsory.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

For the successful passing the exercises and getting the credit the handing in of papers with soil classification, evaluation of the Proctor and CBR test, design of asphalt mixture and example with the design of flexible and rigid pavement according to catalogue are required. The exercises are ended up with the test covering the basic knowledge.
For the successful passing the examination the content of lectures and excercises are required. The examination is divided into the written and oral pa
