Firm’s Management I

This course is specialised on understanding to basic conceptions of leadership and Management in civil engineering.
It deals with identification of principles managing methods.
The communication, decision making, control processes and effective managerial habits are defined.
The course respect sequencing and creating synergy in teamwork
the same as the current questions in management and fellow-worker leading in construction companies.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

♦ Understanding and getting knowledge about basic principles and relations in company management in construction engineering.
♦ The guidance for application of basic managerial habits.
♦ Basic conceptions of Leadership and Management.
♦ The communication, decision making and control processes are trained.
♦ Application of principles leadership and managing methods.

Prerequisites

Basic orientation in organization of construction firm. The ability to understand, speak and writte by given language.

Co-requisites

Leadership and management of the group. Basic of project work from the creation to the closing report.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit, lessons, exercises, projects, presentations and the closing reports.
They are specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. The course is taught through lectures, practical classes and self-study assignments. Attendance at lectures is optional, but attendance at classes is compulsory.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Active participation in exercises and the quality of teamwork is evaluated.
Knowledge of theory is proven in written test and the application by oral exam.
Written exam - series of question oriented in general knowledge and their application. Limits for each grade of evaluation will be set. The limit for oral exam approval is 50%.
Oral exam is the supplement to written exam. The objective of oral exam is to prove deeper understanding of the issue.

3.–5. Information, classification of information, efficiency of information, informational systems.
6.–8. Decision-making and decision making processes.
9.–11. Control processes.
12. Organisation of management, organisational structures.
13. Leadership and management of people.

To get knowledge about basic principles and relations in management and basic managerial habits.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Extent and forms are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.

Recommended optional programme components

The advantage (not an obligation) is an experience with the real work of the people, in the company, leading of any group, children and young people etc.

2. Principle of growth and change, effectivity, paradigm
3. Effective habits of leaders and managers
4. Positive activity, importance of self- awareness, range of influence and sphere of action, Frankl and model for freedom of choice
5. Leadership and management, principles of personal leadership, centre of intention, Mission statement, identification and confirming of individual roles and aims
6. Managing, planning, organisation and time management, priorities, delegation of authorities and responsibility
7. Human resources, creating and transformation of relationships, creating of teams
8. Increasing of organisation effectiveness through fellow workers, paradigms of interdependence
9. Principles of mutual advantage, interpersonal leadership, types of interpersonal interaction, dimension of win-win behaviour, supportive systems and processes
10. Fundamentals of effective communication, empathetic listening, understanding, principles of efficient presentation
11. Synergy as a principle of creative cooperation, appreciation of diversity, creativity, brainstorming, analysis of force field
12. Basic dimension of leaders personal development, equilibrium in force renewal, continuity of learning

Syllabus

1. The Introduction to the exercises, the criterions for the projects and the teamwork system for future consruction managers.
2.-13. The content of singles exercises is the work of every team on its own project, sequential realization or presentation and the feedback from the participants and the teacher.
14. The handover of the closing reports and the credits.
