Spanish Intermediate - Part I

This course deals with the following topics: understanding everyday phrases and the ability to talk about everyday problems, the use of past, present and future tenses. The use of phrases with the subjunctive mood and the use of reported speech. Attention is paid to the subjunctive and conditional sentences. This grammar is projected into topics such as daily news, works and topics related to work life. Finance and shopping.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student is able to understand the main topics in a text standardly produced provided the text covers daily topics and topics the student is acquainted with. It could be work, studies or leisure activities. Since the student is able to deal with standard situations, it shouldn´t be a problem to spend time in a Spanish speaking environment. The student is able to produce texts whose content deals with daily issues or issues the student is acquainted with. The student is able to provide details on the topics and provide a more detailed description even when expressing abstract ideas. The student is able without major difficulties to speak about hypothetical situations. The student is able to perform the above mentioned because he/she has knowledge of such grammatical structures such as a wider use of the subjunctive tenses and present perfect. The student learns about conditional sentences and phrases related to the use of subjunctive. The level of sophistication achieved allows the student to link ideas past – present – future or real – unreal (hypothetical). Student reaches level B1- according to EFR

Prerequisites

Students should have knowledge that corresponds to the level of the previous course BYS22.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Grammar, vocabulary is practised in an interactive way, with emphasis on conversation and cultural backgroung of Spanish speaking countries. Developement of communication and listening skills using interactive audio-visual technologies. LMS Moodle and Smartboard.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Students attend classes regularly and actively participate in class (no more than 3 absences). If the student has more than 3 absences during the semester, then an end-of-course test must be taken. The above mentioned is valid unless otherwise specified by the tutor.

The aim of this course is to teach the Spanish language and the basic communicative skills that are necessary to achieve the level B1 inferior.

1 Week – Unidad 6 Speaking about the health state, expressing hypothesis. Uses if present tense subjunctive mood: regular and irregular verbs. Vocabulary related to health.
2 Week – Unidad 6 Expressing positive ideas, giving advice. Uses of future perfect tense. Healthy lifestyle.
3 Week – Unidad 7 Speaking about travelling and events related to it. Localize events in the time line. Uses of Cuando + subjunctive or indicative mood. Phrases Esperar + que + subjunctive or indicative mood. Vocabulary related to travelling.
4 Week – Unidad 7 Expressing desires and doubts. Complaining and making a complaint. Warning someone (positive and negative). Phrases with Como es possible que + subjunctive. Transportation means. Tourism, different types of tourism and tourists.
5 Week – Unidad 8 Speaking about work conditions. Comparative phrases, absolute superlative. Irregular comparative phrases. Different professions.
6 Week – Unidad 8 Expressing the intensity, assessing events, confirmation or negation of a hypothesis. Impersonal phrases. Vocabulary related to work. Working environment and women.
7 Week – Unidad 9 Identifying someone, expressing owe, reflexive phrases, Phrases with Que raro que + subjunctive. Clothes.
8 Week – Unidad 9 Expressing compassion, speaking about familiar and unfamiliar things or events. Present perfect of the subjunctive mood. Physical description of people. Folklore of Latin America.
9 Week – Unidad 10 Reporting commands. Expressing preferences and asking about them. Difference between Cuál and Qué. Indirect command reporting. Reconstruction of houses.
10 Week – Unidad 10 Evaluating things. Expressing indifference. Past imperfect of subjunctive mood irregular verbs. Professions related to the reconstruction of a house. Intelligent houses.
