Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to understand simple German expressions and phrases and deal with the most common everyday situations. They will be able to conjugate the verbs "to be", "to have" and other basic verbs and furthermore, they will be able to deal with a few verbs with separable prefixes. Also, students will be able to use personal and possessive pronouns, definite and indefinite article and plural. They will be familiar with basic numbers and time expressions. Moreover, students will be able to form sentences (they will have grasped the rules of German word order) and use the negative. They will be familiar with the modal verbs können and wollen, with basic prepositions and the past tense ("Perfekt"). Students will also have mastered vocabulary on the following topic: meeting others, introducing yourself, family, food and drink, living in a house or a flat, my day, free time, learning.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods


Grammar and vocabulary is practised in an interactive way with emphasis on conversation. Development of communication and listening skills using interactive audiovisual technologies.
LMS Moodle and SmartBoard.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To be able to get their credits, students need to attend classes regularly (max. 3 missed classes/semester)and actively participate in the lessons.

1st week: personal pronouns, preposition aus, verbs sein, kommen, sprechen, the alphabet, topic: meeting people, introducing yourself
2nd week: revision, verbs leben, haben, preposition in, topic: family, filling in a form
3rd week: numbers 0-20, possessive pronouns, topic: family, personal details
4th week: word order, indefinite article, plural, verb essen, topic: food and drink
5th week: numbers 21-100, negative, definite article, advebs hier/dort, topic: living in a house or a flat
6th week: questions, numbers 100-1 000 000, negative nicht, adjectives, téma: furniture
7th week: separable prefixes, prepositions an, um, von, topic: telling the time, days of the week
8th week: verbs sehen, arbeiten, verb position in a sentence, topic: daily routine, weather
9th week: accusative, vebs lesen, treffen, schlafen etc., topic: hobbies
10th week: modal vebs koennen, wollen, past tense – intro, topic: plans and goals
11th week: past tense („Perfekt“) with sein and haben, topic: learning goals
12th week: revision, test
