Original Abstract

Earthen dikes are among the oldest building constructions that man has created and even nowadays they do not lose their significance. They are largely used both in construction of roads and railways, and also for hydraulic structures. In hydraulic engineering, earthen dikes built inland serve for protection from floods, and they are also applied to millraces, fishponds, other artificial water reservoirs, etc. Earthen dikes are usually exposed to irregular hydrodynamic loading when it is necessary to assume that soil can be saturated by water in some part, and, conversely, unsaturated in another part. Due to their safe operation, it is necessary to draw attention to the matter of stability of the construction and its basement. This paper describes certain phenomena connected with the operation of earthen dikes, and possibilities of their monitoring with an emphasis on the application of the method of electrical impedance spectrometry.
