Original Abstract

Currently, there are many sources of historical maps. These are different web portals, web services, depositories, databases of archives etc. However the offer of information services and information of products from these sources is disunited and in many cases insufficient too. Above all, there is no information on the origin and definition of structural elements of maps (geodetic bases, the method of mapping, the method of digitization, etc.). These pieces of information can be found in other sources, but searching is not only time consuming, but nowadays even with the support of the latest technology almost ineffective. What we really miss is the information whether the map in question became a subject for further research and what results were achieved. The aim of this paper is to propose a database of historical maps in order to provide entire information not only of the basic categories (content of map field, frame and out-frame-data) as well as data on any research carried out with reference to the obtained results. Database design issues from an analysis of three basic categories of elements of historical maps (general features and features of special and a series of maps from a short period of time). A conceptual model was drawn-out with the help of ontology in the Protégé environment and presented in the form of an ER diagram in the UML language. ER diagram was implemented into a geographic information system (GIS). The designed database will be used for data mining of the historical maps using fuzzy logic. The proposed project is the integration of a database of historical maps to GIS data warehouse of Brno University of Technology.
