Original Abstract

Phase change materials (PCMs) are materials that are able to absorb, store and subsequently release energy utilizing the latent heat of phase change. The amount of latent heat is usually significantly larger than that of sensible heat thereby the sufficient energy storage can be reached. The composition of PCM, which determines the temperature of phase change, is chosen according to a particular application and operating conditions. In the last decade the rapid development of phase change materials has been accomplished and in these days the phase change materials are being widely used in civil engineering and building architecture to decrease the temperature fluctuation, energy consumption and to improve the thermal inertia. The optimal design and integration of PCMs in buildings cannot be achieved without the usage of computer simulation tools, optimization techniques and experiments. In numerical modeling it is crucial to properly determine the operating conditions and thermo-physical properties of used materials since these inputs significantly influence the accuracy and credibility of simulation results. Unfortunately, in the real world these parameters are not fully known and they tend to randomly alter, mainly due to a variable composition, moisture content and other factors. The paper is aimed at the optimization of the thickness of PCM layer in a multi-layer wall under uncertain heat transfer coefficients on the wall and at the investigation of its influence. This is accomplished by utilizing stochastic optimization techniques and a scenario approach.
