Original Abstract

The treatment of natural aggregate in the Czech Republic annually generates a considerable amount of secondary raw materials – sludges that are generated as the waste when aggregate is being washed to usually be dumped in the areas of abandoned quarries. This paper introduces the most important ceramic technological properties (granulometric analyzes, mineralogical and chemical composition, sinterability, refractoriness, plasticity, etc.) of the sludges that are generated by washing of three different aggregate (Moravian greywacke, granite, and quartz sand). For their very good sinterability and auspicious granulometry, these materials can be labeled as very perspective for their possible specific application in the raw-material mixtures for either the production of, for example, color body ceramics (for example brickmaking) or for the preparation of earthy glazes. The properties of the sludges are compared to the properties of standard ceramic raw materials – clays and feldspars.
