Original Abstract

This paper deals with the problems of analysis and design of the thin-walled steel beams with web holes used in the storage systems and expedient flooring structures, in general. The verification of the St. Venant torsion stiffness is a partial step to determine the ultimate and design strength of the beams with respect to lateral torsion buckling. Usually the St. Venant torsion constant is derived from the parameters of cross-section weakened by hole and from the full cross-section. Based on weighted average of those values the substitute St. Venant torsion constant for the whole beam is being established. The calculated pure torsion parameters are verified by tests executed on three different lengths of beams (2, 3 and 4 meters). Also the profiles without any holes were tested for the comparison. The experiments were evaluated and the results are compared with the theoretical values. On the basis of the performed test results the formula for the St. Venant torsion constant of the thin-walled beams with the web holes has been derived.
