Original Abstract

Cutting simulation is a promising but still not fully adopted and widely spread method for predicting the cutting force and a chip shape: parameters that can help to improve the real cutting conditions and also the tool life. This paper briefly describes the four finite element model formulations suitable for machining simulation, focusing on Lagrangian formulation and SPH meshless method. Virtual orthogonal and milling cutting experiments with physical cutting experiments were carried out to compare the measured cutting forces and the chip shapes. Johnson-Cook material model was used to predict the stress and strain of AISI 1045 steel. Results showed good agreement (within 6 to 12 %) among simulated and measured cutting force values.
