Original Abstract

Increasing demand for heat and power is without doubt one of the major problems both in the process industry and elsewhere. This problem can be solved by improving existing heat and power systems and/or by retrofit of existing processes. This paper strives to provide an overview of convenient methods for rapid and optimum (and/or near optimum) selection of utilities. The choice and trade-off is based on a relation between a process and utility system. Simple mathematical models created or adapted especially for this purpose are described. Further, criteria for evaluation of the most suitable system from economic, technical and environmental points of view are specified. Combined heat and power (CHP) systems are discussed including their utilizing in a process. Various trends of further development in the field are described and discussed.

Keywords

Trade-off, utility systems.
